Way to go!!!!

ISRO today launched 10 satellites in one go through the PSLV. This is supposedly a world record. In these days, when NASA seems to be making all the news, its good to see ISRO catching up as well. Way to go ISRO, and good luck for your Moon mission.

Yeah. Quite a story. But I wish instead of wasting so much money on Moon mission which proves nothing in practical terms, India spend some money on primary education and poverty. By reaching moon you are not going to solve any of the existing formidable problems.

P.S. I am trying for the third time to decrypt the Captcha here and if it does not succeed, I am not posting this comment.

Agree.. But then I think these are 2 separate issues. I feel, that the money for poverty and primary education is already there, but in the wrong bank accounts. I guess, the allotment of money for defense projects is done at the time of annual budget, so you cannot really say that its money badly spent.

Also, I thought the cryptic was human-readable :P.. Yes, I have faced these problems too..

@Karthik
Yaa i agree...Its indeed a proud moment!!

@Gandalf:
A moon mission isn’t really a waste...Most times all the experiments that go with such a thing generally gets used for other missions or even day to day lives!!
An analogy would be F1 racing...Ppl might say that instead of companies spending billions of dollars just for propaganda and trying to win races, they could as well use that money for better purposes...But the truth is these companies have a high return on investment by using the developed technologies for their commercial cars...Most of the safety mechanisms, better and reliable engines of our cars are due to these testings that happen on F1 cars..So as u can see nothing is really a waste..

PS: By the i totally agree with this cryptic thing!!

@Dilip

Nice analogy. And good chain of reasoning. But I still think that we as a developing nation should be more cautions about how we spend our money. In a race to become a developed nation, we should not take such a giant leap such that one of our feet just remains stuck on the ground and the other foot has gone so forward that you collapse.

@ktk
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. One small step for ISRO, a giant step for mankind!

@gandalf
I think some of the IPL money should be put towards education and poverty. What a shameful display of wealth and it is! Your point is noted, but think of it as a culmination for ISRO of years of effort and research and finally reward.

@dilip,

Good analogy. Although it aches to see so much fuel vaporising in a few seconds.

@nat,

agree with your IPL argument. Actually they could divert some portion of IPL money towards these causes. I mean, players/league owners could part with some portion of their money, and I don't think the public would mind paying an extra 10Rs per ticket.

The best part is PSLV/GSLV are both self-made. And as far as the Chandrayaan mission goes, I had asked this question to an ISRO scientist way back in 2004 when we were on a so called educational visit. His reply was, you don't stop after doing 12th or BE, though you are educated enough...you keep moving ahead.

@Gandalf:
I partly agree with what you said and i still want to differ....
In order to bolster my case, forgive me for giving you one more analogy...
I still remember the nuclear tests that were conducted when Mr. Vajpapee was in power...It was indeed a very proud moment for me and for the country...U can argue that instead of conducting nuclear tests we could as well have spent that money for a number of other worthwile causes, but we have achieved a lot from it...here we go..
1) Proud to be a nuclear nation..Just count the number of nations that has done this on their own...believe me you will not cross the five fingers of your first hand...
2) Even if the US Nuclear deal doesn’t go through, we will someday reach a state where we can safely generate nuclear power and from what i have read, the tests really help...Capability of generating nuclear power without losing your bargaining power in the world scenario is something that we would always be thankful for...

Further unless we dream of taking a giant leap we might not go anywhere in the future...

I do understand that we have a number of issues in hand which needs to be definitely solved, but believe me sacrificing one thing to improve the other is not the solution and as many ppl in this comments list suggested, there are ways of improving primary education and poverty...All it needs is the will to do it rather than the money...:)

PS: We wouldn’t even have been here if we had not started a space program long time back when more than 60% of our population were under the poverty line...But now we proudly proclaim that we can launch 10 satellites in one go!!!
Howz that for future thinking?

@parag,

that was a good answer by him..

@dilip,
"All it needs is the will to do it rather than the money".. Well said!!
